Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film March Madness 2019 Brackets – My Picks For Section Two

I’m not a sports fan, but I do enjoy variations of picking March Madness brackets for movies, books, and TV shows. This year the evil, cruel, beautiful people at io9.com came up with a bracket for “What’s The Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film of the Last Ten Years.”

This was not at all easy to do. I felt physical pain in deciding between some of them. I thought I would show you my list and I would justify my choices. There are four sections total, and then those four winners would compete. Below is the second section.

You can see the first section picks HERE.

Round 1

Bracket 1: Edge of Tomorrow vs. Pacific Rim

My Pick: Pacific Rim
Reason: While both have their good merits, I enjoyed Pacific Rim enough to own fan art.

Bracket 2: Captain America: Civil War vs. Wonder Woman

My Pick: Wonder Woman
Reason: Civil War ranks pretty high among the Marvel movies, but Wonder Woman deserves the edge since it is the best thing DC has done in over a decade.

Bracket 3: Star Trek (2009) vs. It Follows

My Pick: Star Trek
Reason: To be fair, I have not seen It Follows. However, I enjoyed J.J. Abrams’ take on Star Trek.

Bracket 4: Gravity vs. The Lego Movie

My Pick: Gravity
Reason: Everything is awesome, but Gravity has more gravitas to it from a filmmaking perspective.

Bracket 5: Guardians of the Galaxy vs. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

My Pick: Guardians of the Galaxy
Reason: No contest. Guardians wins on all counts.

Bracket 6: Ex Machina vs. The Muppets

My Pick: Ex Machina
Reason: Out of all of the pair ups, this one seems to be the most extreme to compare. They are very different movies. Filmmaking trumps family fun giving Ex Machina the edge.

Bracket 7: District 9 vs. X-Men: First Class

My Pick: X-Men: First Class
Reason: I’m one of the few people out there who didn’t like District 9. I couldn’t get into it at all.

Bracket 8: How to Train Your Dragon vs. Blade Runner 2049

My Pick: Blade Runner 2049
Reason: While I had some issues with the Blade Runner sequel, the craft of the movie outshines its flaws. Toothless would win most other fights especially against all the other animated features in this section.

Round 2

Bracket 1:

Pacific Rim vs. Wonder Woman

My Pick: Pacific Rim
Reason: Wonder Woman‘s downfall in this round comes from the lackluster and lazy end fight. Pacific Rim managed to stick the landing and add another motivation speech to compare to Independence Day.

Bracket 2: Star Trek (2009) vs. Gravity

My Pick: Star Trek (2009)
Reason: Gravity has far more issues than Star Trek. Plus, “I like this ship! You know, it’s exciting!

Bracket 3: Guardians of the Galaxy vs. Ex Machina

My Pick: Guardians of the Galaxy
Reason: No contest. Guardians wins on all counts.

Bracket 4: X-Men: First Class vs. Blade Runner 2049

My Pick: Blade Runner 2049
Reason: Blade Runner‘s filmmaking choices tip the scales for this bracket.

Round 3

Bracket 1:

Pacific Rim vs. Star Trek (2009)

My Pick: Pacific Rim
Reason: A tough choice, but given the option to re-watch or write a paper on either movie, I’m picking Pacific Rim more times than not.

Bracket 2: Guardians of the Galaxy vs. Blade Runner 2049

My Pick: Guardians of the Galaxy
Reason: No contest. Guardians wins on all counts.

Round 4

Final Bracket: Pacific Rim vs. Guardians of the Galaxy

My Pick: Guardians of the Galaxy
Reason: No contest. Guardians wins on all counts.
