My Evening With D&D Against Humanity; Funny Was In The Cards

You may not be aware of this, but they have created a Dungeons and Dragons Starter Kit. This is a quite ingenious thing. I played it just the other night with friends. It comes with:

• 64-page adventure book with everything the Dungeon Master needs to get started
• 32-page rulebook for playing characters level 1-5
• 5 pre-generated characters, with character sheet
• 6 dice

It is great if you have never played or if you needed a refresher or if you wanted to try being a Dungeon Master for the first time (aka the reason we were playing). It combines the basic structure of a board game with the added imagination needed for D&D.

The game needs a minimum of five people; four adventurers and a Dungeon Master. Sadly, there were only four of us total. So, we decided we would all take turns playing for the missing person. It was then that I had a brilliant idea. Rando Cardrissian should assist us.

Rando Cardrissian is part of Cards Against Humanity. It is an imaginary player that contributes by someone randomly picking a card and adding it to the round. If you are unfamiliar with this game, a judge picks a card that says something like “Next on ESPN2: The World Series of…” Everyone except the judge quickly picks a card from their hand to fill in the bank and places the card face down on the table. The judge picks the best response from that round. This is a very adult game and some cards can have raunchy words on them. If you have ever played with Rando, then you know he is an evil bastard that wins more rounds than any imaginary character has any right to win.

In our D&D game, the character sheets are pre-made which includes all the stats, backstory, character traits, gear, and skills. We decided to actually use the Cards Against Humanity card deck to provide Rando with any dialogue or side things happening. His character was a less than moral mercenary with sticky fingers who was a halfling (that’s a Hobbit to the non-D&D people).

The basic setup of the game is that four people are escorting a wagonful of supplies from one town to another. We decided Rando was asleep in the wagon and pulled a card to add to that description. The card pulled said he was “Concealing a boner.” Our party is traveling down the road when we needed to stop because there was something blocking the road. When the wagon stopped, Rando mumbled in his sleep “Genghis Khan.”

The blockage was an ambush. Surprise. When it was Rando’s turn to attack, we pulled a card for his battle cry and I swear to the gods the card I pulled from the middle of the deck was “A can of whoop-ass.” Later, another member of the team killed one of our attackers and Rando yelled an exclamation of joy for this by saying “Justin Beiber.” Once the situation was resolved, Rando climbed back in the wagon to dream of “Natalie Portman.”

We had to stop the game there for the night as it was late, but it was a lot of fun. I recommend checking it out and if you are a player short, I recommend letting Rando play. He served us well and added extra laughs to the evening.
